The future...
I saw my future today and I am appalled.
There I was sitting and enjoying a Roast-Beef-with-Cheddar-Cheese-on-Regular-Bread-hold-the-onions sandwich from Schmaltz’s when I saw my future walk right in front of my face.
There they were, seven men eating lunch. All of them apparently professional. All of them apparently successful. But it wasn’t the men themselves that so mortified me… they were all wearing white starched shirts with dark suit pants and a tie. All of them! It was as if someone stamped them out of play-dough at the local Business Man Factory and sent them on their merry way.
I mean is this really what I’ve been conditioned to strive to achieve. All through school they tell, “If you make good grades you’ll succeed in life.” How is it a success to be identical to the rest of the world?
In school they say that, “If you try really hard you’ll achieve your highest goal.” How is it my highest goal to have to pretend to enjoy eating with a bunch of people who look like me during my 45 minute lunch hour?
I mean this really can’t be all there is to life. I can’t of breezed through 12 years of public-payed-for-education so that one day I might, just might, get to wear a starched white shirt with dark suit pants and a tie.
There they were, seven men eating lunch. All of them professional. All of them successful. All of them no indistinguishable from the millions of other successful, professional men across the world.
